What is a PWA and how is it different from a regular website?
PWA (Progressive Web App) is a web technology that gives a regular web page the features of a mobile app: fast loading, push notifications, offline work and installation on the home screen. Unlike a regular online store, a PWA looks like an app to the user, but can be found on Google and does not require a download from the app store.
Will a PWA replace a mobile app?
For most e-commerce companies, yes. A PWA offers the same core features (push notifications, offline mode, speed) but requires only one code base. It is worth developing a separate native app only if you need access to specific device functions (eg NFC, highly specialized AR) that are not supported by PWA.
When is it worth switching to a PWA in an online store?
If the share of your mobile traffic is over 50% (most online stores do) and your current online store’s mobile speed is poor (Lighthouse score below 70), a PWA is a reasonable investment. A PWA is also worth considering if you maintain a separate mobile application and want to reduce maintenance costs.
